This unique American, highly collectable antique violin by Stanford Denver
Lincoln Ross was made in 1927 and is #55.
S.D.L Ross is a noted maker in John Dilworth's comprehensive compendium of
exceptional violin makers, The Brompton's Book Of Violin And Bow Makers.
Ross, S.D.L Worked circa 1923 Coeur d'Alene, Idaho USA. Prolific maker. Own
model of large proportions."
The violin is definitely a unique American design and is of excellent
construction; fully blocked corners and 2 piece high arched top and back were
both fully cleated by the maker. Top and back plates are flat and sharp at the
edges and curve under toward the ribs. Purfuling is very finely inlaid and the
button design also unique.
Original reconditioned rosewood tuning pegs, ebony nut, fingerboard, tailpiece
and saddle. New bridge, fine tuner, chin rest, rosewood end pin and strung with
Larsen Virtuoso strings.
This violin "of large proportions" has very exceptional volume and resonance,
producing very clear tones while also being very easy to play. It is perhaps
best suited to Celtic and Old Time fiddle styles where soloing or standing out
musically among other musicians and instruments such as mandolin and banjo in a
session is essential.
Edit - The top plate has a very slight depression underneath the E string
bridge foot from decades of storage under string tension (1/32" - 1/16"). The
new bridge has been cut accordingly to level and does not affect the
magnificent tone or playability of this unique and rare fiddle.
Violin only for sale. Will ship in an old case for protection.
